Sn-pink pigments of the sphene type, with chromium ions as chromophor, were synthesized via the ceramic route as well as by the sol-gel method. The gel was prepared from colloidal silica and chlorides (SnCl_2, CaCl_2·2H_2O and CrCl_3·6H_2O). SiO_2, SnO_2, CaCO_3, and Cr_2O_3 were used in the traditional ceramic method. Crystal phases appeared after heat treatment at different temperatures, and their evolution was followed up by X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy. The chromatic properties of the pigments were tested in the glaze for ceramic tiles of Zorka-Sabac, Serbia.
