The algebraist Otto Schreier (1901-1929), who died at twenty-eight, left his markin two mathematical communities that were, in the 1920s, hotbeds of mathemat-ical modernity: Hamburg and Vienna. Recently discovered documents, providedby his posthumous daughter or transcribed from Karl Menger's Nachlass, allowus to fill in some more details of his fascinating biography.
