Our two-article series on the dilemmas facing a new-building surveyor (MER May and June issues) highlight some of the adverse building practices adopted at shipyards. What the surveyor reveals is very interesting, but hardly revolutionary — there is little doubt that most newbuild surveyors, class or otherwise, know all about the short-cuts made during the ship construction process.
