It may be Gallic flair, or just sheer bloody-mindedness. But strikes, demonstrations and pickets seem to be an inevitable part of the French industrial landscape. Unlike in Britain, where in the 1980s the power of the unions was crushed during the Thatcher years, in France it is the mili-tants who still have the upper hand.
