Responses of the four morphological types ofPetalonia fasciato light intensity and photoperiod, and to temperature variations, were determined in a defined medium. Protonemata and plethysmothalli grew in even the most extreme experimental culture conditions.Ralfsia-like thalli and blades developed under all light intensities tested at 16 C. Best thallus growth and earliest zoospore production from the blades were found in continuous light. The combined effects of light and temperature on the development ofP. fasciaare discussed. These two parameters may determine its morphological life history.
