Review of gated SPECT imaging in women with suspected coronary heart disease.

Early and accurate diagnosis of coronary heart disease (CHD) in women with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD), by using appropriate and well-validated noninvasive imaging tools, is a cornerstone aimed at reducing the current high morbidity and mortality in this subset of the population. Appropriate diagnostic testing involves a low false-positive rate to address the clinical question and influence posttest management. Progress in imaging is being measured by new and exciting developments in noninvasive diagnostic methods that show promise but lack evidence-based proof of accuracy and efficacy. The use of a standard everyday clinical tool, such as gated SPECT, which is supported by a large body of evidence-based data, plays a critical and valuable role in identifying women with an increased risk of developing CHD.
