Contaminated oils mean more frequent fluid replacement, high disposal costs (up to three times the cost of new oil) and high maintenance and operating costs. It is estimated that 50 percent of power generating equipment failures are due to a loss of essential lubricating properties and 38 percent are due to fluid contamination. The ingress of solids, water and various gases (primarily air) into a system can have deleterious effects on hydraulic fluids and on the lubricating and insulating characteristics of oils. Fluids can be protected from such contaminants by a comprehensive contamination-control program incorporating prevention of fluid contamination, removal of contaminants and fluid-system condition monitoring.
