An improved dilatometer is described in which a cathetometer with an optical mounting is used as a recording device. This made it possible to expand by one order of magnitude the scale of measurement of the light indicator displacement and continuously measure the expansion of large-size (5-25 mm) samples in a temperature range of 300-l200 K with an error of 1%. The dilatometer has a sensitivity of 3×l0{sup}(-6) cm. Results of measurements of the relative thermal expansion of the 80.5% LiF-19.5% CaF{sub}2 eutectics in a temperature range of 300-850 K and estimates of measurement errors are presented.
