Determination of symmetric end-loadings from the bulk stress on the lateral surface of a rectangular prism

A method is presented for the determination of the end-loadings and the internal stress distribution on a rectangular prism from the bulk stress field on one surface. This method has potential applications to a range of engineering problems since the surface bulk stress field can now be readily obtained using thermal emission technique.
