U.S., EU Use WTO Policy Review To Critique China's Opaque Trade Regime

As part of a bi-annual policy review conducted at the World Trade Organization, the U.S. and the European Union yesterday (June 12) criticized major shortcomings and negative trends in Chinese trade and investment practices that they say are impacting the global trading system. Among the persisting Chinese policies that ran contrary to international trade obligations, they charged, are continued lax intellectual property protection, non-transparent rule-making, discriminatory industrial policies and an over-reliance on subsidies that distort trade, according to the comments of the U.S. and EU trade diplomats. U.S. Ambassador to the WTO Michael Punke and EU Ambassador to the WTO Angelos Pangratis made their comments in Geneva, along with those of other Chinese trading partners, as part of the WTO's fourth Trade Policy Review (TPR) of the Chinese trade regime from June 12-14.
