Outcomes of functional analyses of self-injury during which participants wore protective equipment (PE) were compared to those during which PE was not worn. Results of analyses without PE suggested that self-injurious behavior (SIB) was maintained by negative reinforcement for 2 participants and nonsocial stimulation for a 3rd participant. However, SIB was eliminated either immediately or eventually for all 3 participants when PE was worn during their functional analyses. Thus, outcomes of functional analyses with PE did not match those without PE, and the functional properties of SIB could not be identified from functional analyses with PE. Implications for the use of PE during functional analyses are discussed.
