The initial period following immediately after the Perkins' Mauve, may be aptly called as the 'aniline period' wherein a range of cationic dyes close to the structure of Perkins' Mauve were made. The discovery of diazonium compounds by Peter Griess in 1858 was exploited, but not immediately as in the aniline period, approximately a decade later. In the year 1876, Peter Griess had opened up the way to the wider appreciation of the goldmine which lay beneath his earlier diazo reaction, He demonstrated that azo dyes were readily obtained by coupling diazotised sulphanilic acid with various bases derived from benzene and indeed with alphanaphthol. A range of acid dyes for protein fibres were immediately made by several people in the field; several direct dyes based on the azo structure were also made.
