A new drive train "Smoother-F", which is equipped with fluid coupling and wet multi-clutches, has been developed for medium-duty trucks with a view to both reducing life cycle costs and improving safety driving, and replaced the dry clutch-type 6-speed manual transmission heretofore in use. The fluid coupling combined with a diesel engine works well as a starting device because of its high efficiency and isolation of engine vibration. This report describes the history and characteristics of the fluid coupling in comparison with the torque converter known well as the starting device of a automatic transmission.
