Vehicles and varnishes play an essential role in ink formulations. With the exception of color, vehicles control all of the properties of an ink, whether it is drying or setting speed, gloss and adhesion. Varnishes provide the special effects and gloss that the consumer notices. "Ink formulators select the vehicles based on the properties they require for specific applications," said Chris Halvorsen, global marketing manager for Hexion Specialty Chemicals. "Ink drying speed, setting speed, film hardness, adhesion, gloss, as well as the rheological and pigment wetting characteristics are made possible from the vehicle."
