A CASE OF SOMATIC REDUCTION IN A PREMEIOTIC CELL IN WHEAT

An unusual case of somatic reduction was found at first meiotic metaphase in a single anther of a wheat plant. Of 10 reduced cells, four had 22 chromosomes, five had 20, and one was not clearly countable. Chromosome pairing indicated that the reduction had involved a random segregation of homologues.
