Complete compensation of selfhyphen;phase modulation in cesium vapor at 1.06 mgr;

We have observed a complete cancellation of selfhyphen;phase modulation in 1.06hyphen;mgr; pulses propagating through cesium vapor. The negative nonlinear refractive index responsible for this is measured asn2/N=minus;(2.5plusmn;0.5) times;10minus;30esu, in good agreement with the theoretical value minus;2.62times;10minus;30esu.
