EU Official Pushes Back Against USTR Criticism Of Brussels Rulemaking

A European Union official yesterday (Oct. 3) rejected out of hand arguments by U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman that the EU should adopt a more U.S.-style rulemaking procedure by allowing more input from private stakeholders, and defended against criticisms that the EU process as it exists now is non-transparent. In the EU's view, a better approach to effective regulatory cooperation across the Atlantic is to establish a formal process whereby regulators on either side can consult with each other about potentially divergent rules. This is one of the key aims of the European Commission in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), the official said.
