Korea Halts Beef Imports From U.S. Facility, Other Shipments Unaffected

South Korea has halted imports of beef from a U.S. meat processing facility in Texas after detecting traces of the growth-enhancing drug zilpaterol in two incoming shipments totaling 22 tons. The ban is limited to meat from that one plant, operated by Swift Beef Co., and does not affect other exports of beef from the United States. The Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in an Oct. 11 statement said that it had halted shipments from the Swift Beef Co. facility - called "3D" - on Sept. 24 after detecting small traces of zilpaterol in the shipments, according to an informal translation of the release. Korean border officials strengthened testing for the drug after Taiwan reported detecting traces of zilpaterol in a shipment the same day, the statement said.
