Following a 17-day trial, Mr Justice Mann handed down an extensive judgment on 31 July, dealing with complex issues concerning claims to copyright in uniforms created for the original Star Wars film. The judgment will interest Star Wars aficionados, but also makes interesting reading for copyright lawyers, as it addresses when three-dimensional creations can be considered sculptures or works of artistic craftsmanship, whether a default judgment for copyright infringement obtained in the US was enforceable in England, and whether the claimant could bring fresh proceedings for infringement of its US copyright in the English action.
