Hideo Suzuki, who can lay proudly lay claim to being the DTI's first secondee from Japan has only been in the UK five weeks, but already he has identified how he can help UK automotive suppliers become more competitive. Leaving his job as deputy chief of the general coordination division within MITI's Agency of Industrial Science and Technology where he was in charge of a budget of ￡900 million annually for the two year secondment with the DTI he is surprised at what he sees - the delays that invariably seem to occur when organisations are talking -in this case government and trade associations - and the poor attention to quality.
