Along With New Dems, Republican Leadership Backed TAA In House Vote

The 126 lawmakers who voted to reauthorize the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program on June 12 included many key members of the House Republican leadership, a little more than half of the typically pro-business New Democrat Coalition and a sizable chunk - but nowhere near a majority - of the Ways & Means Committee. In all, 86 House Republicans voted in favor of the renewing the program - roughly one-third of the conference - along with 40 Democrats, or one-fifth of the House Democratic caucus. The GOP leadership pushed its members to support the deal in order to pave the way for passage of Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), which was linked to TAA. Pro-trade supporters in Congress have described last Friday's GOP support for TAA as being the "high water mark" in comparison to past votes on the program, which many Republicans have traditionally opposed.
