Malaysia Touts Benefits Of ISDS In TPP, Defends Secrecy Of Negotiations

The Malaysian government last week defended the inclusion of an investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanism in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement and sought to counter criticisms from civil society groups about the secrecy of the T PP negotiations. "ISDS is not only for foreign, but also Malaysian investors which are increasingly looking outwards," Malaysia's Ministry of International Trade and Industry said in a TPP briefing paper posted on its website on June 20. "Furthermore, ISDS is not new to Malaysia as we have signed and ratified 64 Investment Guarantee Agreements (IGA) since 1963 which also have provisions on ISDS."
