Russia Calls For WTO Decision In 2016 To Clarify Security Exceptions

Russia is calling for World Trade Organization members to develop by June 2016 a General Council decision that would clarify the scope of the national security exceptions included in various WTO agreements, which has emerged as an issue after Russia and Western countries last year imposed sanctions on each other as a result of the Ukraine conflict. Moscow proposed that a commitment to develop a decision on security exceptions be part of the declaration that will be issued at the December WTO ministerial meeting in Nairobi. The third part of that declaration will deal with the WTO's post-Nairobi agenda.
