Denmark's environment minister this week conceded defeat on an effort to advance a proposal that aimed to unblock the approvals process for growing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the European Union, saying that she had exhausted every option in trying to win over a blocking minority of member states, including Germany and the UK. "I can say that we tried basically everything in order to dissolve the last part of the blocking minority, but it didn't succeed because nobody from Germany, France, UK or Belgium was willing to move," Minister Ida Auken said in a June 11 press conference after the meeting of the Environment Council.
