This was the last of a trio of similar conferences, the two others being concerned with 'Ocean food webs and economic productivity' and 'Integrated coastal zone management'. EXPO'98, in Lisbon, dedicated to the 'Oceans - heritage for the future', was the perfect setting for the deliberations.
