Onboard large-scale phased array feed systems are studied to improve satellite antenna performances. In order to realize lightweight onboard satellite antennas, we proposed a technique that uses linear interpolation to reduce the number of phase control circuits. The technique can reduce the number of phase control circuits by about two-thirds compared to the conventional phased array. The antenna patterns formed by the technique was numerically confirmed to have almost the same characteristics as those formed by the conventional phased array antenna. The validity of the proposed technique is also confirmed by experiments of a 19-element phased array antenna with 7 phase control circuits.
