Two days after the World Trade Organization issued an adverse decision on a U.S. meat country-of-origin labeling (COOL) law, the House Agriculture Committee on May 20 approved a bill fully repealing the law by a vote of 38-6. The committee repealed labeling of beef and pork sold in retail outlets, as well as chicken even though it was not subject to the WTO dispute. Congressional sources indicated that chicken labeling was included at the request of the poultry industry, a point not disputed by a spokesman for the National Chicken Council (NCC).
