Highly dispersed nanosize ceria slurry was prepared in 30 wt % potassium phosphate aqueous solutions by ball milling. Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was used as process aid to disperse ceria in high electrolyte solutions. The effect of PAA addition during milling or to the milled pulp on ceria particle size distributions was determined by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The addition of PAA during ball milling caused a significant shift of isoelectric point (IEP) from pH 7 to pH 1.7. The average size (d(50)) of ceria particles with PAA addition during ball-milling decreased significantly from 128 nm to 50 nm with a narrower distribution, while the stability of nano size ceria slurry improved significantly.
