Offshoring new beginning for engineers

Hershey plans to cut as many as 3,000 jobs and move some candy production to Mexico. About 300 people gathered in Hershey, Penn., last month to speak out against possible efforts to move candy-making jobs out of the area. The group is trying to get the attention of Hershey executives. So far, the company has not said where the job cuts will be. But in Hershey, workers do not want to wait to find out where jobs will be lost. Four years ago, the town held protests to fight off a sale of Hershey and were successful. Hershey said the job cuts and the move to Mexico will save the company about dollar170 million a year. (See "U.S. still invests in manufacturing," page 67.) While this might not sound too good for Hershey, Penn., it might be good for the company. It could be the only way the Hershey corporation will survive.
