Nuclear divisions in the vegetative hyphae ofRhizopus nigricansandPhycomyces blakesleeanus

The process of division in somatic nuclei ofRhizopus nigricansandPhycomyces blakesleeanuswas studied with the aid of an acetoorcein stain - fixative technique. The nuclei in the vegetative hyphae of these fungi were found to divide by conventional mitosis. Chromosomes were counted and inRhizopus nigricans, nensp;=ensp;16. InPhycomyces blakesleeanus, nensp;=ensp;14. Other proposed modes of nuclear division in the fungi are discussed in relation to these findings.
