A new computation method has been introduced into multicompartmental analysis, which saves computer time and gives good fitting parameters even in complicated systems. This method was applied to the analysis of phosphate metabolism in the cotyledons ofPharbitis nilduring the early stage of germination. Soon after the start of imbibition, the metabolic flows of phosphate were initiated by very small amounts of enzymes. Some enzymes involved in phosphorylation, RNA synthesis, and phospholipid synthesis were indicated as existing in the seeds and as being activated from nonactive forms during imbition. The activities of all phosphate metabolisms, except the breakdown of RNA, phospholipids and protein-bound phosphates, were activated about ten to hundred-fold after the start of protein synthesis. The technique of multicompartmental analysis can be applied to various physiological problems to estimate the quantitative and systematic metabolic flows in any tissue.
