1. Seed-like organs from organic layers in lake silts in the Upper Acheron River, Canterbury (NZMS 1 S74:154807), dated 22200 #xB1; 750 yrB.P.(old half-life value) (NZ 3940), were identified as mericarps from a species ofMyriophyllum. Some had a hollow centre, others had a #x201C;plug#x201D; at the angled upper end (Fig. 1A). The general shape and size of the mericarps compared favourably with those from modern specimens ofMyriophyllum elatinoides(Fig. 1B).
