Oxovanadium(IV) complexes of ortho-, meta-, and parasubstituted fluoro-, chloro-, bromo-, and iodobenzoates have been synthesized and characterised by microanalysis, infrared, magnetic susceptibility and electronic reflectance spectral measurements. The electronic reflectance spectra show three electronic transitions typical of tetragonally distorted octahedral complexes. The degree of distortion in the complexes estimated by DT/DQ ranges from 0.08#x2013;0.23 indicating a weak distortion of Ohgeometry. The magnetic moments are lower than normally observed for monomeric oxovanadium(IV) species suggesting a strong magnetic interaction.
