Systems consisting of a bilindione or dipyrrinone chromophore and a covalently attached, but nonconjugated, fluorescing naphthyl, anthranyl, and indolyl residue were prepared and their luminescence properties measured. Excitation energy is very effectively quenched by the dipyrrin radiationless deexcitation channel of bilins as well as by the photodiastereomerization mode of dipyrrinone fragments. A Förster type energy transfer mechanism is inferred from intermolecular Stern-Volmer kinetics in solvents of different viscosity
