Ancient Indian Literature on Importance of Livestock from Pre-Vedic to Ashoka Period

Livestock has a very important role in reducing poverty in rural India. The study was undertaken to prove the importance of ancient Indian literature on livestock. Ancient literature is full of references on different aspects of animal husbandry. Careof animals was of paramount importance in ancient India. Animal husbandry laws were very scientific. The study was conducted to compile the information pertaining to animal husbandry available in ancient Indian scripture. Important information is available on breeding, nutrition, housing, animal husbandry laws, community practices, animal health (diseases, medicine, surgery, and reproduction), industry, and livestock and agriculture. Indigenous animal husbandry requirements and how to fulfill with low-cost indigenous products are mentioned in ancient literature. Low input cost will give more profit to small farmers, which is possible by using low-cost local medicine, nutrition, and management system.
