Despite its popularity pangasius producers in Viet Nam are held back by lack of finance and erratic demand

In Viet Nam the number of pangasius processors is down by 30%, VASEP reports, amidst serious problems within the industry. Production in 2012 is forecast to fall to 1.2 million tonnes. Supplies to Viet Nam's largest market, the EU, have fallen drastically. Most EU member countries imported much lower quantities than usual, making the US the single largest country importing Vietnamese pangasius, with higher imports during the third quarter of 2012. Exports continue to other markets though, both from Viet Nam and other producers in the region. India is also now importing pangasius from Viet Nam.
