Protoplasts from various organs of a wide range of crop plants have been isolated and cultured (Smith 1974), and plants have been developed from cultures of tobacco (Takebeet al1971) and carrot (Grambowet al1972). The protoplasts can also be induced to fuse and form somatic hybrid cells (Poweret al.1970) that can be grown into plants on artificial media. This has been achieved only in tobacco (Carlsonet al.1972) and progress in other plants appears to be slow.
