F.Xavier Malcata was an AOCS Honored Student and Ralph H.Potts Memorial Fellowship recipient in 1991.Ten years later,he was a highly regarded expert in fats and oils and AOCS honored him with the Young Scientist Research Award.Malcata's approach to the area of fats and oils first materialized during a Ph.D.program in chemical engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison;he worked with controlled lipase-mediated release of fatty acids from butter fat,using membrane reactors and immobilization by plain adsorption.
