Heterogeneous potassium permanganate oxidation of methyl isoricinoleate with catalytic amount of water

In the presence of a catalytic amount of water, methyl isoricinoleate undergoes oxidative cyclization with potassium permanganate-copper sulfate in dichloromethane to give 5-substituted gamma-butyrolactone in 62 yield.
