NZR's Stores Branch operated a sawmill and associated tramway at Maroa, an isolated locality on the central North Island plateau between Taupo and Tokoroa, between 1939 and 1947. The mill provided cut timber for railways'purposes. Byron Somervell gave an outline of its history in his book Tall Trees Tramways; the purpose here is to fill in some gaps, add illustrations and draw upon the reminiscences of Murdoch (Jim) Edge, fitter at the mill from 1944 to its closure, and also memories of his son, Lionel.
