A total of 4 200 mt of tilapia were exported by the Costa Rican industry in 2005, earning US 20.3 million dollar. In 2004, export earnings had fetched around US 23.5 million dollar, whereas six years ago, the figure settled at US 11 million dollar. The most important product form was fillets with 3 400 mt , worth US 19 million dollar. It is interesting to note that 412 mt of tilapia skin were exported at US 289 000 dollar and 130 mt of scales, with US 146 000 dollar in earnings.These byproducts are used to extract jelly and collagens, which are utilised in Europe to produce cosmetic products.
