BLUE ECONOMY PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE DEVELOPMENTIN AFRICA

The Blue Economy business model aims for more efficiency in fisheries and aquqculture, without damage to the environment. Based on this concept, carefully targeted investments in improved management of fisheries and application of new small-scale aquaculture technologies are already improving income, nutrition and health in Africa.Ecologically, oceans play an important role in producing oxygen, absorbing carbon dioxide, and maintaining marine biological diversity and ecosystem productivity - nearly 99% of the living space on earth and about 97% of waters on earth is in the oceans.Achieving healthy oceans has always been difficult, as they are plagued by the problems of overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction and loss. Global warming, ocean acidification and deoxygenation are new threats; and combined with the former threats, these new issues are creating formidable challenges to this important source of many ecosystem services.
