The past, present, and the future of polymer science at BAM, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, is discussed. BAM is a designated institute at the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) for metrology in chemistry, in close cooperation with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). The BAM's general mission of safety, its participation in standardization and regulation, and its obligation to transfer technology will continue to characterize BAM's profile as an RFE. Since 1908 BAM has been engaged in the quality control of crude caoutchouc and, since 1924, in the quality assurance of insulation materials based on phenolic and amino resin. BAM does research in all the areas, such as geotextiles, landfill seals, and other construction products made from polymers, of polymer science which is then transferred to industry. Furthermore BAM supports standardization and the development of technical rules.
