Mexico has developed a policy framework far environmental protection that aims to halt and reverse environmental deterioration, some of which has been caused by poor agricultural practices in the past. The major policy goal has traditionally been maximizing incomes, with less emphasis an environmental concerns, but the federal government is now seeking to apply sustainable development principles to agricultural policy. Major problems to be addressed in the agri- food sector include the effects of land degradation and scarcity of water resources, as well as economic and trade-related considerations.
