OPENING REMARKS

When Antoine Guedeney, President of the World Association for Infant Mental Health (WAIMH), asked me (Elizabeth Tuters), as a member of the WAIMH Board of Directors, to create a special issue of the Infant Mental Health Journal focusing on clinical approaches, I was honored. True to the practice of infant mental health, I wanted to work on this project with another colleague; therefore, I asked Yvon Gauthier, Past President of the WAIMH, to join me to accomplish this task. As our timeline was short, we asked contributors to submit the papers that they had presented at the WAIMH 2008 Yokohama Congress. We also wanted the contributions to be interactive, and each would be discussed by a WAIMH member. We also chose to include a keynote paper that Yvon Gauthier presented at the (November 2008) Third International Interregional Conference on “Clinical Infant, Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis in our Changing World,” sponsored by the International Psychoanalytical Association, the Toronto Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, and the Hincks-Dellcrest Children’s Centre.
