Based on the premise that the initial acquisition costs of a PWM IC, a couple of FETs, and a few passives are less than buying a POL module, many designers have made the decision to implement discrete solutions. The purpose of this article is to examine the many other considerations that need to be taken into account when making a decision to design or buy point-of-load solutions.
