Challenges of providing drinking water for urban and peri-urban slums from groundwater resources in hard rock terrain in India

In western India's hard rock terrain, groundwater is the main source of water supply to urban and pen-urban slums. These slums are not connected to the municipal water supply and drainage network. A bore well with a hand pump, providing water for about 200 people, is usually the least-cost way to provide safe drinking water. Full remediation of contaminated groundwater may not be practicable.
