Gametophytic distinctions ofZygodon(Orthotrichaceae) andAnoectangiumandLeptodontium(Pottiaceae) and the status ofAnoectangium rubrigemmiumof Hawaii

Phyletically,Zygodon(Orthotrichaceae) andAnoectangiumandLeptodontium(Pottiaceae) are only distantly related; however, gametophytically, they are sometimes very similar. In the absence of sporophytic characters, these three genera can best be distinguished by stem anatomy, costal anatomy, and areolation and papillae of the upper leaf lamina. A key is provided for the five Hawaiian species of these genera andAnoectangium rubrigemmiumHoe amp; Crum is considered a member of the genusZygodon,Z. rubrigemmius(Hoe amp; Crum) Zander amp; Vitt comb. nova.
