Determining the extensional flow behaviour of polymers in their molten state is key to the successful processing of polymers. To facilitate this a number of new rheometry tools are becoming available. An extensional rheometer developed by the UK National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in conjunction with Magna Projects and Instruments Ltd should soon be available commercially-following the granting of a manufacturing licence to an unnamed supplier. In addition, NPL has prepared a draft standard for the measurement of extensional viscosity.
