Plastic mulch offers many advantages to fruit and vegetable growers, but removal of the mulch has been a labor-intensive task. Some machines now on the market allow mechanical removal, but are generally not automated. A prototype of an automatedmachine to roll up plastic mulch has been developed and demonstrated. It maintains constant torque on the mulch spool regardless of tractor speed or effective spool diameter The system allows the tractor to be stopped or started without any manual control of the spool drive. The machine is also designed to facilitate removal of the accumulated mulch from the collector spool.
